This report analyses the edge computing strategies of the ‘big three’ cloud providers – Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. We assess how successful they have been at developing solutions across the edge continuum, including on-premise, network and regional edge, and determine who leads this nascent market.

A deep-dive into the edge propositions from the big three hyperscale cloud providers

AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud accounted for 67% of the cloud infrastructure services market globally in Q2 2024. This substantial lead in market share has primed the big three to launch edge propositions. Indeed, a natural progression from developing extensive cloud fabrics is to distribute it to the edge to enable low-latency and data-sensitive applications.

As outlined by our network edge data centre forecast below, we expect hyperscalers to own a sizeable amount of network edge servers in the coming decade, reaching 30% in 2025.
