Does 5G need to “defeat” Wi-Fi to break through private networks scaling barriers, or can these technologies exist side by side and complement each other?
Welcome to our ‘Coffee break reading’ series. These pieces are designed to be short and easy to read, presenting our opinion on a hot topic and challenging you to think about it too. In this edition, we explore the relationship between Wi-Fi and private 5G in enterprise connectivity. Can one really be seen as “better” than the other, and are these technologies really in competition with each other, or can they be complementary?
The fight between Wi-Fi and private 5G (P5G) is often overstated — the right choice depends on context. While P5G can outperform Wi-Fi in large, complex, or mobility-heavy environments, Wi-Fi remains more practical and cost-effective for most enterprise needs. Cost comparisons claiming 5G is cheaper apply only in certain industrial settings where dense Wi-Fi deployments would be expensive and impractical, or for spreading indoor wireless connectivity into outdoor spaces. Each technology has its place, and the future of connectivity will be hybrid, not a fight for supremacy.

Our insight covers the following key points:
- Cost is complex, and P5G can be cheaper than Wi-Fi
- 5G capabilties are not always needed
- Wi-Fi or P5G? The answer is often “both”
- Some P5G players actually “get it”
