Ten years of private network deployments tracked in our global insights tool.
A decade of private network deployments – where is the market at?
STL Partners’ Private networks global insights tool has recorded data on publicly announced private network deployments since 2014. This incredibly rich data set can tell us a lot about the state of this market, who is most active and where future opportunities potentially lie.
Our latest research has focused on three key aspects in assessing the private networking market:
- Private networks are a growth area for telcos – and they are key to enabling other industries to progress with digital transformation.
- After a lot of hype and excitement, growth has been a little slower than was expected a couple of years ago – and some suppliers are struggling to break through the scale barrier.
- What can patterns in global deployments so far tell us about what is to come and where opportunity lies?
The current iteration of the tool includes publicly announced private network deployments up to the end of the first half of 2024. Among the most notable insights from the latest research is that manufacturing is the most dominant industry in terms of number of mobile private networks (MPNs) deployed globally so far.
The research has further discovered that:
- Manufacturing has moved further along the digitisation and automation journey, and will naturally generate more demand for private networks, as will those with significant health and safety demands.
- Some industries likely have significant untapped demand, because private network offerings have not yet been able to meet their specific needs well enough to justify investment. For example, transport and logistics will be particularly well-served by the emerging hybrid private network models that combine on-campus private connectivity with elements of the public network for wide area coverage to service use cases that are relevant to a specific industry.
- Other industries need to see equipment prices, setup costs and complexity come down further to get the investment to make sense. For example, some very compelling case studies have emerged in the construction industry, but the setup costs and timelines have to make sense for what are inherently temporary sites.
