100 Edge computing companies to watch in 2024

As always, this list includes a range of companies, from start-ups to those established in the ecosystem. This year, we’ve asked companies to provide more information on their key proposition within the edge computing market, as well as who their customers are. We are also investigating the types of companies (start-ups vs. established corporates) to see how the structure of the market is changing and where innovation is coming from. 

1. A5G Networks 

Company type: Start up

Key proposition: Providing autonomous and distributed packet core for simplified deployments across multi cloud, to enable private networks, smart cities, connected car networks with seamless public, private connectivity. 

Main customers: Enterprises (e.g. transport and logistics, universities, campuses), telecoms operators and system integrators. 

Notable achievements in 2023: The company has secured notable victories with customers, including the implementation of a mobile network for transportation and logistics in an Asian country, the establishment of private networks within a US university campus, and the provision of Network as a Service in the EMEA region. Recognising A5G Networks’ achievements, CRN awarded the company with recognition in the Networking and Unified Communications category. The company also presented its machine learning-based optimisations for the data and control planes of the packet core software. A5G Networks boasts a robust partnership ecosystem, collaborating with edge data centre providers, RAN vendors, end-to-end orchestration, and server hardware vendors, offering diverse chipset options such as Intel and AMD. 

 

2. Aarna Networks 

Company type: Start up

Key proposition: An open source orchestration, lifecycle management, real-time policy, and closed loop automation platform for edge and 5G services. 

Main customers: Global SIs and telecoms operators who sell onto enterprises. 

Notable achievements in 2023: advanced its Multi Cluster Orchestration Platform (AMCOP) to production and introduced a beta of its Aarna Edge Services (AES) for cloud edge orchestration. the Aarna also secured a $6.15 million Series A funding round.

 

3. Adtran

Company type: Established

Key proposition: Ensemble is a network virtualisation platform that supports a multi-vendor ecosystem, enabling customers to deploy best of breed hardware and software applications, and providing operational simplicity and flexibility and automation. 

Main customers: Telecoms operators, managed service providers (MSPs), wholesalers, enterprises, systems integrators (such as NEC/Netcracker, Kyndryl, dacoso, Infosys, etc.) and hardware resellers (such as Dell). 

Notable achievements in 2023: Adtran officially launched Ensemble Cloudlet and broadened its market reach throughout the year. The company also confirmed compatibility of its Cloud OS with multiple hardware vendor solutions and verified its platform’s interoperability with essential edge compute applications, such as AI inference engines and video analytics applications. Adtran is also developing several innovative use cases (both in live trials and production environments), including a smart manufacturing initiative with AI and video analysis leveraging hardware acceleration, scalable edge computing for a global shipping and logistics customer, and a hardened device for in-vehicle edge computing with multi-carrier 5G, SD-WAN/SSE, and video analytics for a logistics and delivery customer. 

 

4. AI EdgeLabs

Company type: Start up 

Position in edge ecosystem: Software Application 

Key proposition: Offers unparalleled cybersecurity for edge computing and distributed Linux environments with its Linux-based EDR and NDR solutions, ensuring comprehensive threat detection, proactive response, and seamless integration for resilient protection. 

Main customers: Enterprises (e.g. manufacturing, maritime, transport, energy, oil and gas), telecoms operators. 

Notable achievements in 2023: AI EdgeLabs achieved significant milestones in the field of cybersecurity with a series of feature enhancements within domains, such as Network Detection and Response (NDR) and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) Innovations. It also updated its UI/UX by improving the interface and dashboard. Finally, AI EdgeLabs expanded the cybersecurity insights available through its platform to include detailed analytics, MITRE ATT&CK use cases, and trend analysis.  

 

5. AiM Future

Company type: Start up

Key proposition: Provides concurrent multi-network inferencing accelerator is shattering the cost and complexity barriers to adopting edge and end-point AI. 

Main customers: Enterprises (semiconductor supplier/design group). 

Notable achievements in 2023: In 2023 Aim Future in 2023 closed its Series A round of funding led by L&S Venture Capital and joined by fellow new investors Daedeok Venture Partners and Hi Investment Partners, as well as existing investors KB Investments and WE Ventures. Aim Future joined the Arm AI Partner Program to accelerate the pace of innovation at the edge. Additionally, AiM future is partnering with Design & Reuse to expand its reach to a global engineering community. Finally, Aim Future was selected to participate in the European Commission funded Horizon Program and two Korean-government backed ScaleUp TIPS and KETI innovation grants. 

 

6. Akamai Technologies

Main customers: Enterprises (e.g. media & entertainment, SaaS, automotive, IoT, retail), telecoms operators. 

Notable achievements in 2023: Akamai has expanded its global distributed cloud by adding an additional 16 core regions bringing the total to 27. These sites complement its existing 4100 edge pops. Akamai has also expanded its channel partnership and edge ecosystem in 2023 to include specialised platforms, open source solutions, and channel partners that help some of the world’s demanding challenges for enterprises surrounding low latency requirements, cost efficiencies, digital sovereignty and locality. The expansion includes notable partnerships with systems integrators, product development, managed services providers, value added resellers and ISVs addressing media & entertainment, video gaming, retail, automotive, ML/AI, distributed systems and more.

 

7. AllEdge

Company type: Start up

Main customers: Enterprises in verticals including retail, hospitality, education, SMBs, industry, finance, healthcare. 

Notable achievements in 2023: AllEdge has introduced cloud-native processing, networking, and security solutions encompassing private and hybrid cloud infrastructure, SD-WAN network services, and SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) security services, as delineated by Gartner. The services from AllEdge are available in both managed and co-managed formats. 

 

8. American Tower

Company type: Established

Key proposition: A hybrid, multi-cloud computing platform at the edge. 

Main customers: Telecoms operators, enterprises, fibre providers, HCPs. 

Notable achievements in 2023: American Tower announced a joint proposition with IBM to expand its neutral-host, Access Edge Data Center ecosystem to include IBM Hybrid Cloud capabilities and Red Hat OpenShift. The goal is to enable technologies such as IoT, 5G, AI, and network automation for customers. 

 

9. Arctos Labs

Company type: Start up

Position in edge ecosystem: Platform (e.g. Infrastructure Management and Orchestration, APIs and Developer Tools, AI and Data Management Tools, Multi-cloud Platform)

Key proposition: Dynamic workload placement optimisation integrated with orchestration and IT automation to save costs and ensure performance in telco cloud, multi-cloud and hybrid IT scenarios.

Main customers: Orchestration vendors, system integrators and telecom operators.

Notable achievements in 2023: Arctos Labs has introduced a series of new features in phased releases, such as improvements for optimising workload placement in relation to SaaS and shared components. Moreover, the company has developed a solution for enhancing the distribution of compute capacity in edge fleet deployments during the planning phase. Arctos Labs has also entered into a partnership with Lytn, a leading company in network prediction.

 

10. AtlasEdge 

Company type: Growth stage 

Position in edge ecosystem: Facility (e.g. Data Centre, Rack Systems, Power & Cooling, Site Design, Commission and Maintenance) 

Key proposition: Building Europe’s leading edge platform. Deliver high quality and secure colocation and interconnection service to ensure that AtlasEdge meets customer needs. 

Main customers: Enterprises, platforms, networks. 

Notable achievements in 2023: AtlasEdge completed its acquisition of Datacenter One (‘DC1’), becoming Germany’s leading distributed platform, with a clear pipeline to expand further. The company also secured a €725 million finance facility, providing AtlasEdge with capital to build new demand-led, efficient, and sustainable sites across Europe as well as executing further strategic M&A. AtlasEdge announced a raft of strategic partnerships throughout the year, including Megaport, Upstack, PacketFabric, LINX, Northshore and Voxility. 

 

11. Atos and Eviden (an Atos Company)

Company type: Established

Key proposition: Atos provides a 3-dimension end-to-end offering, from far-edge to cloud, hardware to AI, deployment to customization to managed services, focusing the delivery on generating business outcomes rather than technology upsell.  

Main customers: Systems integrators and enterprises. 

Notable achievements in 2023: In 2023, Atos continued its “Business Outcomes-as-a-Service” offering’s commercialisation and expanded its partnership with Dell on NativeEdge. Also, Eviden (an Atos company) launched its new EXR server with Nvidia GPU and received a $100M contract by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) to deliver two supercomputers to the India Ministry of Earth Sciences. 

 

12. Avassa

Company type: Start up

Key proposition: Makes edge application and infrastructure management and operations easy, secure, and scalable, with platform purpose-built for the on-site edge. 

Main customers: Enterprises (e.g. retail, QSR, energy, pharma, industrial, automotive, and maritime), independent software vendors (e.g. Extenda Retail, Flasheye). 

Notable achievements in 2023: Avassa has had a strong 2023 from both a product development perspective, launching several new key features with offline capabilities leading the way, as well as on the commercial side with several wins and strengthened partnerships. Flasheye stands as a public customer reference, and RedHat is one of its key partners. Avassa has also been named twice in Gartner’s Hype Cycle in Edge Computing 2023. 

 

13. Avesha

Company type: Growth stage

Main customers: Avesha has over 10 POCs currently and will have customer stories to share this year publicly.  

Notable achievements in 2023: Avesha issues a patent for “Providing a set of application slices within an application environment”, which outlines a method for managing cluster resources within an application environment. In addition to this, Avesha’s KubeSlice earned recognition from Gartner for its capability in ensuring secure “inter-service” networking with zero trust. This technology is designed to enable applications that operate across various cloud environments and numerous edge locations, delivering a robust and reliable multi-region deployment solution. 

 

14. Azion

Notable achievements in 2023: Azion has been recognised for its platform across multiple institutions. It was classed as a market leader and fast-mover in GigaOm’s Radar for Edge Platforms and as a Strong Performer in The Forrester Wave™: Edge Development Platforms, Q4 2023. Frost & Sullivan awarded Azion the 2023 North American New Product Innovation Award in the Edge Serverless Computing category. In ecosystem building, Azion welcomed Upstash as a new partner, expanding developer solutions, in addition to expanding its product portfolio by introducing a new Store Product Category: Object Storage, Edge SQL, and Edge KV. The platform’s 2023 innovations include a new console UI, a Command Line Interface (CLI) integrated with Azion Vulcan, a Code Assistant for streamlined development, and various tools aimed at improving the Developer Experience (DX). 

 

15. Barbara

Company type: Start up

Notable achievements in 2023: Barbara’s Edge AI Platform reached a milestone in maturity last year, through product enhancements, external recognition (Gartner Cool Vendor in Edge Computing) and achieving ISO/ IEC 27001 the international standard for information security. It launched Barbara Marketplace, an ecosystem of already-developed off-the-shelf Edge apps and Edge AI models. Barbara rolled out six significant updates to its Edge AI platform, e.g. AI mode and Docker batch edge orchestration and Tenser Flow deployment. It also enacted strategic partnerships, for example with NVIDIA, through its Inception Programme, and with UST, Picsellia and Cuerva. 

 

16. BE-IN-G

Notable achievements in 2023: Initiating the first launch of BE-Platform with SLA Core and Orchestration Engine features. Closed its first deals, will be participating in the “Cognitive Hospital” project to demonstrate these first deals – orchestrating diverse use cases in an advanced connectivity environment, managing various network technologies and hybrid Edge/Cloud computing. 

 

17. Bell Canada

Notable achievements in 2023: Bell launched the Bell 5G Developer Portal, equipping developers with 5G and MEC resources so they can build new edge computing solutions. Bell also conducted the first live transatlantic holographic meeting using 5G and MEC technology in collaboration with Verizon, Vodafone and Matsuko. Lastly, Bell participated in 5G Future Forum (5GFF), exploring how edge resources can interoperate globally. 

 

18. blocz

Company type: Start up

Notable achievements in 2023: In 2023 blocz deployed its edge infrastructure into The City of Las Vegas.  Along with its partners, Vapor IO, blocz delivered ultra-low latency real-time AI based CCTV Computer Vision solutions to The City of Las Vegas. blocz also expanded its UK operations by opening a number of additional edge locations at key locations. blocz designed, prototyped, and began to deploy its sustainable edge cooling solutions.  Codenamed ES4D, this solution can reduce the energy consumption of IT hardware at the Edge by as much as 70%+ when compared to traditional data centre deployments and air-based cooling.

 

19. Bridge Alliance

Notable achievements in 2023: Bridge Alliance launched the Federated Edge Hub (FEH) in partnership with Summit Tech providing the Odience platform. FEH is a testbed for edge cloud federation covering 2 markets Singapore and Thailand utilising CAMARA APIs for simple edge cloud discovery. The MEC platform providers in these markets are Singtel Singapore and AIS Thailand respectively. A field trial was conducted with a 360 degree interactive live event streamed from Montreal with remote audiences participating on their 5G smartphones and VR devices in Singapore and Bangkok. 

 

20. CanaryBit

Company type: Start up

Notable achievements in 2023: Initiated two pilot projects in collaboration with automotive global partners, showcasing one at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2024. They also completed a pilot in the Aerospace and Defence sector with Leonardo’s Cyber & Security team.

21. Ciena

Company type: Established

Notable achievements in 2023: New 5G transport platforms were launched to address the growing diversity of edge site requirements, from the low footprint outdoor and weatherproof Ciena 3985 router, to the dense coherent metro aggregation router 8140, extending the broad 5G edge router portfolio while maintaining the focus on power efficiency, compactness, and versatility. Additionally, the company continued to grow its Universal Aggregation approach, offering platforms that can address the requirements of any services, from 5G xHaul, to advanced enterprise services and even residential broadband over shared fibre (through its uOLT plugs), helping operators simplify and monetise their edge assets. 

 

22. ClearBlade

Company type: Start up

Main customers: Major edge AI customers are enterprises in energy (Energy company, Seawolf Resources) and rail (Chicago Metra, BNSF) and software vendors such as a global cloud company with 250+ buildings and technology facilities.  

Notable achievements in 2023: In 2023, ClearBlade expanded its customers from 85 to 297 across 35 countries. New customers included Tata Steel, Continental and Halio. The global cloud company also became a ClearBlade customer, using all four ClearBlade products (IoT Core, IoT Enterprise, Intelligent Assets, and Edge) across different business units. In 2023, ClearBlade also rolled out four releases to its product suite.  

 

23. ClearX

Company type: Start up 

Position in edge ecosystem: Platform (e.g. Infrastructure Management and Orchestration, APIs and Developer Tools, AI and Data Management Tools, Multi-cloud Platform) 

Key proposition: An easy way to expose, aggregate, and monetise edge & network APIs. 

Main customers: Fixed line customers include telecoms operators e.g. Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Colt, and PCCW Global. Edge customers aren’t public yet but include three of Europe’s largest telecoms operators. 

Notable achievements in 2023: ClearX completed a PoC with three of Europe’s largest telecom operators demonstrating edge product federation and exposure of edge products on a marketplace. The PoC additionally demonstrated dynamic pricing capabilities for edge products with SLA guarantees and automated settlement between all parties. Notable achievements in 2023: GECCO raised a round of capital and completed the development of its fully fanless EdgePod. GECCO also undertook several hardware and software partnerships to build out the EdgePod offering. On the software side GECCO worked with select container and VM orchestration partners to validate their software on its multi-core Intel and AMD servers, demonstrating remote orchestration and management for large scale deployments. On the hardware side GECCO formed a partnership, and conducted integration testing, to validate the deployment of up to two miniature GPU-based AI inferencing engines per server and up to 20 per EdgePod.

Additionally, it launched the IBM Hybrid Cloud Mesh product, serving as a connectivity fabric across cloud, on-premises, and edge locations, aimed at helping an enterprise regain control of its multicloud infrastructure. The company also collaborated with Equinix to offer the IBM Hybrid Cloud Mesh, providing application-centric hybrid cloud connectivity to the enterprise. The IBM CIO Office utilises IBM Edge Application Manager (IEAM) for content delivery and video streaming. Furthermore, a new product release, MAS v8.11, has enhanced the Maximo Application Suite (MAS) – an enterprise asset management solution.

Notable achievements in 2023: VMWare announced its new orchestration system architected for zero touch deployment and lifecycle management to enable simple edge operations across sites with limited IT. VMWare also announced new edge telemetry capabilities to provide insight and visibility into edge workloads, identify end devices, and make available contextual information to accelerate problem resolution. Furthermore, it announced Intelligent Assist, an AI co-pilot to help manage and diagnose issues with services for the software-defined edge. At VMware Explore Audi Automotive spoke about how VMware Edge Compute Stack is helping them virtualising industrial computers and motion control systems to save cost and improve flexibility.

Notable achievements in 2023: Vodafone and AWS launched an AWS Wavelength Zone in Andalusia, Southern Spain, expanding access for European business customers. Vodafone completed seven trials under its Edge Innovation Programme in 2023. Vodafone externally opened the UK’s first Edge Innovation Lab, aiming to support digital industries in Greater Manchester and create a global centre of excellence for real-time mobile applications. Edge Discovery Service API with OpenSesame’s SyncStage app and AWS infrastructure was deployed across Vodafone, Rogers, and Verizon as part of the 5G Future Forum, showcased at Mobile World Congress 2023. It also hosted Thought Leadership at the Future Enterprise Networks event on 14 June in London.

It has augmented its product suite, Touchstone, particularly in testing Open RAN and Edge environments, including the introduction of functionality dedicated to real-time monitoring during testing.
