Telcos place AI bets on infrastructure, sovereignty and voice

LONDON – 26 August 2026 – Telcos deepen their AI offering with new enterprise solutions aimed at supporting faster AI adoption among this segment. This is the finding of the latest quarterly update of the ‘Telco GenAI adoption tracker’ by telecoms consultancy and market research firm STL Partners.
“There is a proliferation of telco AI solutions targeted at enterprises, especially from the most advanced telcos that keep expanding their solution portfolios”, comments Marina Koytcheva, Research Director at STL Partners. A total of 56% of the 870 projects in the tracker focus on revenue generation, rather than on internal AI implementation.
The most striking trend is the focus on digital sovereignty: 30% of all new additions to the tracker over the last three months are initiatives for providing sovereign AI solutions for the public sector and enterprises – in most cases, AI-focused infrastructure. “While many telcos have lamented the burden of regulation over the last decades, that same regulation now gives them the right to claim trustworthiness that other technology companies might struggle to achieve”, explains Koytcheva. This can help telcos secure a role in a nation’s pursuit of digital sovereignty.
A key recent trend, visible in the data, is telcos’ work on voice AI solutions. Voice is the most natural human way of communicating and sits right in the very core of telcos’ identity. Device-agnostic solutions embedded in the network can provide ubiquitous access to voice AI, while the evolution of AI technology means the quality of voice interactions between humans and AI is improving. Recent voice AI-related announcements by LG Uplus, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone target enterprise customers. They follow the buzz that T-Mobile US created in the industry six months ago with its network-native AI translation for consumers. “We expect to see a lot more activity in the area of voice AI in the next year, as telcos explore this opportunity that fits them like a glove”, concludes Koytcheva.
