Identity Rapid Impact Programme: Succeed in the $50bn+ Digital Identity Ecosystem

Fast-track Your Identity Strategy

Summary: The $50bn+ digital identity market represents one of the last major access points in the digital economy that is not conclusively owned by a small number of technology players, and for which operators could realistically stake a claim. However, Facebook, Google and others are now pushing aggressively into this space, and operators need to move quickly or risk losing out. STL Partners offers a tailored Rapid Impact Programme to prioritise and develop key initiatives in this rapidly developing space.

Background

As we discussed in our recent report 'Mobile Authentication: Telcos’ Key to the Digital World?', identity represents one of the last major control points in the digital economy that is not conclusively owned by a small number of technology players, and for which mobile operators could realistically stake a claim. It is therefore of fundamental importance to operators with ambitions beyond connectivity. However, Facebook, Google and others are now pushing aggressively into this space, and operators need to move quickly or risk losing out. Facebook Login, for example, is already used by over 750,000 apps and websites.

Success stories, such as Swiss Mobile ID and Norwegian Mobile BankID, demonstrate that operators have unique assets and capabilities in identity. Recognising the opportunity, the GSMA has also launched the 'Mobile Connectinitiative, which aims to facilitate industry-wide collaboration across privacy-centric authentication, identity and attribute services. However, success is not guaranteed. Although identity is widely known as a technically complex field, the complexities around its business case and developing an effective commercial proposition and go-to-market strategy are not well understood.

STL Partners offers a tailored Rapid Impact Programme to prioritise and develop key initiatives in identity. We can demystify the identity opportunity and help you to move forward with confidence in this rapidly developing space.

Key Benefits

  • Maximise your company’s share of the $50bn+ digital identity market
  • Understand the complex and rapidly changing identity ecosystem, leveraging our market-leading Telco 2.0 research and hands-on, commercial experience
  • Identify key initiatives to prioritise, including the financial impact these will have on your organisation
  • Save valuable time and resources by fast-tracking the development of an effective commercial proposition and go-to-market strategy
  • Improve ‘return on effort’ by aligning internal objectives and agendas with a common approach

How does it work?

The Rapid Impact Programme combines: pre-workshop briefings with our team to understand your current position, opportunities and challenges; a highly interactive and facilitated workshop with key team members and decision-makers, drawing on market-leading Telco 2.0 research and implementation experience; a comprehensive record and analysis of the workshop's output and next steps; project planning and ongoing support.

A typical approach is shown below:

Part 1: Identity Masterclass (1 day)

  • Stimulus sessions and brainstorming on the identity landscape: trends, opportunities, why operators can win and where they should play
  • Competitor analysis: strategies of other telcos, Internet players and technology providers
  • Sizing the identity opportunity: in your region and market(s)

Part 2: Go-to-Market Strategy Development (1 day)

  • Facilitated workshop and stimulus sessions to enable internal strategy development which fits with your capabilities
  • Draw on real-world experience of implementing identity services
  • Use our unique methods for driving innovation with brainstorming

Part 3: Project Planning (1/2 day) + Ongoing Support

  • ½ day session post-workshop with core project team setting out key targets and deliverables
  • 6 months of support through monthly review calls and one day a month of remote consulting to resolve specific issues

Who is it for?

  • It is suitable for telecoms operators (single or multiple in a country/region) or partners wishing to understand telco opportunities better
  • Typical lead clients include CTO, CIO, CMO, CSO, Directors of Product Development, Digital & Innovation teams, Identity & Access Management teams, and customer/personal data specialists

Why is this unique?

  • We began our coverage of the identity and personal data markets in 2008, and have regularly provided market-leading research and advisory services (including to the World Economic Forum) since then
  • We combine deep theoretical knowledge with hands-on, commercial experience of implementing identity services within telecoms operators
  • We are experts in facilitating innovation and collaboration through brainstorming
  • We can provide an impartial view of key standards bodies, initiatives and vendors, and the benefits/pitfalls of working with them
